About Anxiety Medications

Many say that anxiety medications are completely useless, as most were developed as anti-depressants. They have very little therapeutic impact on anxiety. The part of the brain responsible for the development and perpetuation of an anxiety condition is not reached by anxiety medications, and they have no curative affect. No medication can remove the anxious behavior and reaction that causes these conditions. The section of the brain which is responsible for anxiety disorders is influenced solely by behavior. Both anti-depressants and sedatives can cause side affects that may be interpreted by the sufferer as something that worsens their condition, and in some people, may actually cause added anxiety.

Is Medication The Solution?

Many people visit the doctor and try medicinal treatments. These treatments have no affect on curing anxiety. Some medications that were originally approved for treatment of depression have been found to be effective for anxiety disorders. If a doctor prescribes an antidepressant, one will need to take it for several weeks before symptoms start to fade. Some of the newest antidepressants are called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. These medications, like Lexapro, Zoloft, Paxil, and Prozac act in the brain on a chemical messenger called serotonin. They are started at a low dosage which is gradually increased until a therapeutic level is reached. It is important to discuss side effects with a doctor so that he or she will know when there is a need for a change in dosage or medication.

Dealing With Anxiety

Everyone experiences a certain level of anxiety or tension before taking a test. A little anxiety will actually help motivate you. However, too much anxiety can become a problem if it interferes with the ability to prepare for and perform on tests. If the anxiety is a direct result of lack of preparation, consider it a normal and rational reaction. But if you are adequately prepared and still panic or blank out, your reaction is not rational. Both of these stressful situations may be considered normal, but it is certainly helpful to know how to beat their effects.

Change Your Attitude!

Improving your perspective of the test-taking experience can help you enjoy studying and improve your test performance. Do not overplay the importance of the grade you will receive. It is not a reflection of self-worth or prediction of future success. The most reasonable expectation is to try to show, as much as possible, what you have learned. A test is only a test, and there will be others in the future. Avoid thinking irrationally. Reward yourself after the test. Go to a movie, go out to eat, or visit with friends. Don’t let yourself dwell on the mistakes you might have made.

About Anxiety

Every one of us feels anxious from time to time. Anxiety is the body’s normal response to stressful conditions. Anxiety can positively improve and enhance performance in some people. However, in majority of cases anxiety becomes severe or prolonged and interferes with everyday life. Such a condition is known as anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorder is linked to psychiatric conditions such as depression. Anxiety is considered abnormal when it lasts for a prolonged period of time, occurs in the absence of a stressful event, and interferes with the daily activities of normal life. Anxiety in various forms is the primary symptom of several other mental illnesses and disorders, such as reaction disorder. Some of the most common types of reaction disorders are acute stress disorders, adjustment disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorders and generalized anxiety disorders.

Symptoms Of Anxiety

The symptoms of anxiety are usually divided into two categories, physical and psychological. Both types of symptoms are caused by the brain, when it sends messages to different parts of the body to prepare it for fight or flight when encountering a stressful situation. These messages cause the heart and lungs to work more rapidly and the brain to release stress-relieving hormones. The physical symptoms of anxiety include abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, rapid heartbeat, and shortness of breath. The common psychological symptoms are insomnia and irritability.

What Is Stress?

Stress is a very complex phenomenon that has many definitions and can result from the daily wear and tear of life. Stress affects the immune system, the cardiovascular system, the endocrine system and the gastrointestinal system. Also, scientists now realize that stress can have a serious impact on psychological health. Medical science has categorized stress in four different categories. These are acute stress, chronic stress, traumatic stress and episodic acute stress. Of these four categories, chronic stress is found to be the most serious. It is a type of stress that is continuous, and has the potential to wear down its victims. Chronic stress can also lead to serious health problems such as diabetes, decreased immunocompetence, and many more. People suffering from chronic stress need to seek professional help.

The Statistics Of Stress

Experts suggest that the negative effects of stress on people can be both additive and cumulative. Stress is found to decrease the willingness to take on new and creative endeavors. In the United States alone, almost 25% to 40 % of the workers blame stress for job burn-out. It is also reported that employee stress is recognized as the major drain on corporate productivity and competitiveness.

In simple terms, stress is the opposite of relaxation. Both positive and negative aspects of life can be stressful. Stress comes from the external forces in life that can provoke extreme emotions. People usually think of stress coming from the frustrations and low points in life, but high points and achievements are stressful too. Stress raises the level of adrenaline, which results in an increase in heart rate, respiration and blood pressure.

Tips To Manage Stress

Stress management tips are all about helping to develop an effective stress management strategy. Look at the causes of stress and its symptoms. Find out how stress affects you and what can be done to reduce it. Learn some stress management tips, stress reliever games and stress relieving exercises to help improve your stress management skills and help you cope with stress. The first step in managing stress is to recognize the stressors. Next, put each of them in their place. A few common stress management tips can help you get rid of stress. Take a deep breath and count to ten. Taking a deep breath or two adds oxygen to the system, which almost instantly helps you to relax. By taking a moment to step back you can help maintain your composure, which is what one needs to work rationally through a stressful situation. Remember – relaxation is the opposite of stress. Stand up and smile. Take a short walk. Relax!!

Self-Help And Anxiety

There are millions of people who have experienced anxiety at some stage of their lives. The symptoms of anxiety are characterized by uncomfortable physical symptoms. Sometimes anxiety presents itself in a severe form such as increased heart rate, dizziness, light headedness, shortness of breath, inability to concentrate, and confusion. All these conditions make the victim feel helpless and panicked. The sufferer hesitates to be alone, to venture far from home, or to be in public. In such a situation, self-help programs can really help. Self-help teaches the skills that enable anxiety sufferers to overcome the symptoms of anxiety and handle situations more efficiently. At the same time, the victim also learns to take care of his or her worries and symptoms and to control the stress. The sufferer also learns about helping their physician identify the symptoms and manage the physical problems caused by anxiety.

About Self-Help Books

The power of self-help for management of anxiety can in no way be ignored. There are numerous self-help books available, also in the form of audio books and e-books. Most of these books disclose the simple and true facts about anxiety and depression and suggest different ways of breaking the feelings of insecurity. Self-help books are a good aid in helping yourself beat anxiety and depression.

About The  Nuclear Stress Test

The nuclear stress test can give information about the size of the heart chambers. This test can detect the speed at which the heart is pumping blood and if the heart has any damaged or dead muscle tissue. Nuclear stress tests give doctors information about the arteries and reveal if they are narrowed or blocked because of coronary artery disease. This test is the same as the exercise stress test with one important difference. Doctors induce a small amount of a radioactive substance just before the end of the exercise part of the test. The radioactive substance is not harmful to body or organs.

Need For The Nuclear Stress Test

The nuclear stress test helps doctors know if the heart is working properly while resting, exercising, or both. If the test shows that blood flow is normal while resting but not normal while exercising, then doctors know that blood flow to the heart is not adequate during times of stress. The heart normally pumps more blood during times of physical effort. If the test results are not normal during both parts of the test, part of the heart is deprived of adequate blood flow. If doctors cannot see the radioactive substance in one part of heart, it probably means that that section of heart muscle has died, either because of an earlier heart attack or because the coronary arteries supplying blood to that area of the heart are blocked. During a nuclear stress test a radioactive substance is injected into the bloodstream. This substance mixes with the blood and travels to the heart. A special camera or scanner detects the radioactive material in the heart and creates images of the heart muscle.
