Hello, well I know you're smart enough not to take sleeping pills as those would only make it worse. I think the biggest thing is to stop worrying about not sleeping lol. Like during the day if you're really tired but know that sleeping right at that moment would not be a good thing and so you just lie down, what typically ends up happening? lol. So at night "just lie down" and don't even think about sleeping or not sleeping, just enjoy the rest and relaxation and let your mind wander...

I am a very poor sleeper even now but I went threw a stage when I was only sleeping 1-2 hours in 24. One thing I can say is worrying about it makes it worse if you lie there worrying about not being able to get to sleep as sure as eggs are eggs you won't.

For me getting better sleep has been a case of re education my body, creating a routine that says you are going to bed just as you would with a child. Go to bed and get up at the same time no matter what.

Long term try cutting out caffeene and alcohol in the afternoon and evening.
Turn down the lights, avoid the TV, computer anything that is stimulating the brain, try a light book (or a very boring one) soft music
Try a warm bath lavender can help.
Try a warm drink, traditionally we drink a milky during or one containing chocolate but chocolate contains some caffeine and milk does not always settle the stomach, maybe try something containing chamomile, I admit I loath it on it's own but you can get drinks with it as part of the ingredients Twining do Lime Flowers and chamomile, Spearmint and chamomile, and Honey, Vanilla and chamomile. And the one I prefer is Heath & Heather Night Time Fruit & Herbal Tea.

Try relaxation, (even if you rest you will feel a little refreshed)

There’s lots of other things they normally suggest trying (you will hear it described as sleep hygiene) including
Do nothing in bed other than sleep (well and sex) do not have a TV computer in the bedroom, don't read in bed
the 15 min rule if you are not asleep in 15 mins get up for 60-90 mins and try again (adult sleep cycle is normally 90 mins)
Exercise in the morning or early afternoon
Don't eat too late
Don't have the bedroom too hot to cold.......

If you're like I had been for years, none of good-natured the help others offered came to anything. In fact, I became exasperated with advice from well-wishers who themselves slept well because whatever I had tried - and I'd gone though the book - nothing seemed to work. I could get off to sleep easily enough, but then I'd wake up three or four times a night and struggle to get back. The next day I was ragged.

When I was given citalopram for anxiety during July - September, I was waking up to ten times each might and in the end just had to ask my doctor if I could come off the drug, which I did. I was then put on mirtazapine (Zispin - first 15mg nopw 30mg). Well - from day one I have slept better and continue to do so. If sleep is a real problem for you, I can't recommend these enough. They seem to have only one side effect - they take two or three weeks for a "zombie-like" daytime drowsiness to wear off. I'm fine now and often wake only once a night. I can't say I feel entirely rested the next day but, really, these tablets have been a godsend - a genuine godsend. I can't recommend them highly enough.

I know people vary in their reaction to different drugs, but at least mirtazapine is not an SSRI - it's a unique compound. Reading on the Internet, sleeplessness and agitation can be a common side effect of the SSRI type drugs and that's what I found to my dismay.
