During periods in my life I have suffered from sleep paralysis, which is waking in the middle of the night and being unable to move or talk. It is my understanding that during normal sleep, everybody experiences points where they are paralyzed but with sleep paralysis, you experience this while you are awake which can be very scary!

It is thought that stress; irregular sleeping schedules, and sudden environmental/lifestyle changes can bring this on.

Does anybody else suffer from this? I'm wondering whether there is an increased likelihood of suffering from this if you are depressed/anxious.

Many who suffer from this experience a pushing down on their chest which has been explained as evil spirits in some cultures. Being a spiritual person myself, I have thought for a long time that my sleep paralysis could have been caused by evil spirits (before reading up on the topic) but then again science disagrees with me there!

Yes, I've had this where I would wake up and find myself unable to move my body whatsoever, yet being totally aware of it at the same time. It's a scary feeling and I've never heard a satisfying explanation for why this happens...

I've experienced in the past. It has not occurred since my teens. Back then it was a very frightening occurrence. There was no specific answer for this paralysis. Maybe it was the current or past events causing this. No one was able to put a finger on the cause when I started therapy many years later.
