hi, I’ve been depressed for years. I'm only 19 and really don't know what to do. I'm seeking some guidance if anyone can help me. My parents aren’t really here for me. I'm currently attending college but commuting from home. Because of my depression, I can't seem to make any friends. I'm scared of everyone and can't hold a conversation. I feel completely useless and need your help.
I’ve tried therapy, prozac, and looked all over the net for cures and have yet to find a solution. I know I need to change my life around but don't know where to begin. I’m overwhelmed with things my head, I can barely think. |

Yes, there is. I’m not saying that there is a 'cure' or that it will go away forever.. But you don’t have to feel like you do right now.
Therapy is a long term thing... it does not get too many short term results. prozac (in my opinion) is a ***** med.. And it doesn’t work for everybody.
I find that finding a better life with depression is a constant pushing you to reach out. One little step at a time.
Like first step: making conversation with someone in your class. Just simple conversation. Small steps.
Of course feeling better and less anxious with meds helps the reaching out part a lot. Therapy is an unavoidable must though. Your fears of other people/rejection must be discussed and worked out.
it really does sound like you are ready to help yourself and that you want more out of life |

Hmmm... Cure- I try to be positive but the word cure when talking about depression seems to not fit. (Just how I see it) People do get better and are happy. I think some people have to continue working hard at it and being on meds their whole lives. But I don't know of any set of answers. We've all got to work through it the way that seems right for us. I wish depression came with an instruction book that worked for all of us.
Maybe if you begin with you know what I don't know.
Well, I know some depression is triggered by an incident or stressor so you could then work on how you view the situation that caused the depression and change the thinking into more of a positive. Some people use medication for a while and therapy.
Some depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Synapses? Or something in the brain may not be connecting properly. So medicine would be needed. Therapy can help work out the personal issues to be dealt with that go along with the depression.
Oh, I'm bad. I am/was? Actually majoring in psychology and I should know this stuff but LOL oh well.
There are different types of therapy approaches. I could tell ya about them if you are interested. And there are many anti-depressants out there, too. |
